Calafia is a little place located in the Town and Country strip-mall down in Palo Alto. I read up about the place and it seemed like the hipster “California Food Movement” establishment. Which is all cool, I guess. You know the place? Communal tables and you never have the same person stop by your table more than once. Somebody seats you, a guy gets your drinks, someone else takes your order, someone else delivers the food, the hostess asks if everything is good. You actually communicate more with the Mexican busboy then you do with the Dude that took your order….come to think of it, next time I’ll just tip the kid that cleaned the table, he deserves it!
Nevertheless, Calafia misses the mark. Maybe it was the Monday Lunch Crew? Maybe they just got a good name on ok food? Maybe it’s Palo Alto and they just don’t need to try as hard? I dunno!
I tasted the Duck Dumplings (fresh ground duck, shiitake mushrooms, minced ginger, green onions, sake, sesame oil served with appropriate dipping sauce: $10). The Crimson Quinoa Salad: Vegen and Gluten Free(beet infused golden quinoa with red currants, lemonzest, parsley, shaved roasted beets, wild arugula, basil citrus vinaigrette: $10) and The Daily Special which were Duck Tacos (pulled duck meat served on two white corn tortillas, in a hoison drizzle, shredded Napa Cabbage, topped with chopped jalapeno and pineapple). The Dumplings were good, not like City View’s Sunday afternoon Dim Sum but ok. The Crimson Quinoa Salad was as it is advertized…tasted like cardboard. I would have rather had just eaten the napkins. Lastly, the tacos were fair. Nothing special actually teetering on bland.
Bottom line…..this place was ok. Would I go back? Nah……probably not.
